For Wilson Talent Center Culinary Arts students, the kitchen recently became a global stage.
Eight students traveled to EPCOT® at Walt Disney World Resort to participate in Disney’s “Cook Around the World” culinary competition — a hands-on culinary challenge designed to test creativity, teamwork and technical cooking skills under pressure.
During the event, students competed in a fast-paced cooking challenge inspired by international cuisine. According to Wilson Talent Center, the team drew Europe as their assigned region and had just 90 minutes to create 12 sample-size servings of both a signature dish and side dish using mystery basket ingredients and pantry staples.
The competition is part of the larger “Cook Around the World” educational experience, which brings together high school culinary students from across the country for live culinary improv competitions, career exploration and professional learning opportunities at EPCOT®.
Participants also have opportunities to hear from culinary professionals, explore hospitality career pathways and experience international cuisine within EPCOT®’s World Showcase.
For students, the experience represented much more than simply cooking a meal.
Competitive culinary events challenge students to think critically, adapt quickly and collaborate under real-world pressure — skills essential throughout the food service and hospitality industries.
From organizing ingredients to plating dishes against the clock, students are asked to balance technical ability with creativity and communication.
And while the competition itself may last only 90 minutes, the preparation behind it takes months of practice, training and teamwork.
Career and technical education programs like Culinary Arts continue helping students connect classroom learning to authentic career experiences. Whether students pursue restaurant management, hospitality, baking, nutrition or entrepreneurship, opportunities like “Cook Around the World” allow students to experience the pace and expectations of professional culinary environments firsthand.
For Wilson Talent Center students, the trip also offered something equally valuable. Confidence.
The confidence that comes from stepping into unfamiliar environments, representing their program on a national stage and discovering what they are capable of creating together.
And at one of the most recognizable destinations in the world, those lessons may become memories students carry with them long after graduation.
