Walk through the front doors of the Beekman Center, and you’ll see something extraordinary: a school built entirely around what students need most. From physical accessibility and sensory-friendly design to highly trained staff and individualized supports, every detail is intentional—and every student is valued.
Opened in 1968 and named after Marvin E. Beekman, the Center was one of the first facilities of its kind in the country. It was never intended to mimic a traditional school setting. Instead, it was purposefully designed for students with complex special education needs, offering specialized instruction, therapy services, and an environment tailored for safety, growth, and connection.
For decades, the Beekman Center has played a vital role in Ingham Intermediate School District’s regional service model. Students from across the district’s 12 local school systems attend Beekman when their educational needs extend beyond what traditional settings can support. And yet, these students remain connected to their home districts—part of both communities, with coordinated services that reflect each learner’s full story.
“The beauty of center-based programs is that they’re designed with students in mind,” shared one Beekman staff member. “It’s not about making students fit a mold. It’s about building the mold around the student.”
That mindset shows up in every corner of the building—from adaptive equipment and custom classrooms to the compassion of paraprofessionals who support students through everything from mobility and communication to behavior and emotional regulation. For many students, these team members are the bridge between daily challenges and small victories.
It’s not just about academics—it’s about dignity. For students, families, and educators, the Beekman Center represents more than a program. It’s a place where perseverance is celebrated, growth is measured one breakthrough at a time, and every voice is seen as valuable.
“Despite the challenges, our students find a way—through joy, determination, and an incredible support system,” shared a Beekman teacher.
