Mental health support continues to play an increasingly important role in helping students succeed both inside and outside the classroom.

Recently, Shalonda James-Garza of Ingham Intermediate School District joined Bobby Hoffman and Deb Hart on FOX 47’s Morning Blend to discuss the strong connection between emotional well-being, student success and the importance of accessible mental health care in schools.

During the interview, the group highlighted how schools often serve as a key access point for students and families seeking support services. They also emphasized the importance of reducing barriers to care and creating safe, supportive environments where students can develop emotionally, socially and academically.

Research continues to show that student mental health and academic achievement are closely connected. According to the National Association of School Psychologists, students are more likely to succeed academically when their social, emotional and behavioral needs are supported alongside instruction.

Ingham ISD’s Mental Health Services initiative works to connect schools, students and families with resources designed to improve access to care and strengthen student well-being across the region. These supports may include school-based mental health professionals, community partnerships and prevention-focused programming aimed at helping students navigate challenges before they become larger barriers to learning.

Leaders involved in the discussion noted that supporting student mental health is not separate from education — it is foundational to creating environments where learners feel safe, connected and ready to succeed.

As conversations around youth mental health continue to grow statewide and nationally, local partnerships and school-based supports remain a critical piece of ensuring students and families can access the care they need.
