Some lessons can’t be taught inside a classroom.
Recently, students in the Wilson Talent Center Educational Careers Program had the opportunity to spend a day learning through service while volunteering at the Special Olympics Track & Field Day held at Michigan State University.
Throughout the event, students supported youth athletes as they participated in activities including the 25-meter dash, ball throw, frisbee toss, bean bag toss, and more — offering encouragement, helping facilitate events, and cheering participants on every step of the way.
The experience offered more than volunteer hours.
It provided students with an opportunity to practice patience, leadership, communication, and empathy — skills that are essential for future educators and professionals working with children and diverse populations.
The event was hosted through Special Olympics Michigan (SOMI), an organization that provides year-round sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Across the state, SOMI hosts more than 700 local and regional competitions each year, along with multiple statewide events that bring athletes, families, coaches, and volunteers together through the power of sport.
For many Wilson Talent Center students, experiences like this help bridge classroom learning with real-world impact.
Because sometimes the most meaningful education happens while helping someone else succeed.
