Great teachers do more than educate. They inspire, encourage and sometimes even influence the paths we choose in life.

For Missy Lilje, a teacher in the SXI Transition Classroom at Heartwood School, the influence of great educators helped lead her to a profession she loves.

“Teachers inspired me so much that I decided to make that career change and I am so happy I did,” Missy shared in a recent alumni spotlight from MI Talent Together.

Today, Missy brings that same inspiration into her own classroom, where she works with students and contributes to a learning environment grounded in care, compassion and meaningful connections.

Her appreciation for the teaching profession extends beyond the lessons and experiences she shares with students each day.

“Teaching for me means that I get to immerse myself in the best of humanity. It is a joy and privilege.”

Missy's story is a reminder of the lasting influence educators can have, not only on the students they serve today, but on the people those students may become.

Ingham ISD is proud to celebrate Missy and the dedication she brings to Heartwood School. Her journey reflects the power of great teachers to inspire future generations of educators.
