This summer, several students from the Wilson Talent Center’s Educational Careers Program were accepted into the highly regarded Next Gen Teachers Program at Wayne State University—and they didn’t waste a moment.
Over two action-packed weeks, Mia W., Amya O., Larue J., and Toula M. participated in hands-on workshops on teacher preparation, college readiness, urban education, and cultural competency. They practiced lesson planning, built connections through team-building activities, and explored big ideas like time management and the power of play in education.
Beyond the classroom, the experience extended into the heart of Detroit. Students toured Wayne State’s campus, cruised the Detroit River, and visited cultural landmarks like the Detroit Institute of Arts—all while bonding with peers from across the state who share their passion for teaching.
Programs like Next Gen Teachers help bridge the gap between passion and profession—giving students the knowledge, confidence, and community to pursue careers in education.
