Most students imagine summer as a chance to slow down.
For Gabriel Steadman, it became an opportunity to step onto one of the biggest stages in career and technical education.
Gabriel, a student in the Wilson Talent Center Criminal Justice Program and Fowlerville High School, recently traveled to Atlanta, Georgia, to compete in the SkillsUSA National Leadership & Skills Conference (NLSC) after earning first place in Michigan earlier this spring. The national conference brings together thousands of top-performing students from across the country to demonstrate leadership, technical knowledge, and career-ready skills.
And he isn’t doing it alone.
Joining Gabriel is classmate Aiden, a Mason High School student who will serve as the actor for Gabriel’s competition — helping create realistic scenarios that test communication, professionalism, critical thinking, and decision-making under pressure.
Held annually in Atlanta, the SkillsUSA National Leadership & Skills Conference welcomes more than 19,000 attendees and thousands of student competitors from across the nation, all working toward future careers in skilled trades, public service, healthcare, technology, criminal justice, and beyond.
For Wilson Talent Center students, experiences like this represent more than competition. They are opportunities to apply classroom learning in real-world settings, strengthen confidence, and gain professional experience before graduation.
No matter the outcome, representing Wilson Talent Center, their schools, and the state of Michigan on a national stage is already an incredible accomplishment.
The entire WTC community is cheering them on!
