Last Friday marked a full-circle moment for the Welding Technology program at Wilson Talent Center as staff and students gathered to welcome a brand-new welding shearer—replacing the previous one that had served the program since 2003.

And they have the footage to prove it.

With archived video from the original installation, instructors past and present were able to reflect on the program’s growth over two decades. Retired welding instructor Jeff Grossman even returned to join current instructor Nick Good for the big reveal, bridging a proud legacy of career and technical education.

“This is more than a machine—it’s a milestone,” one student said. “We get to be the first class to use it, and that’s pretty cool.”

A welding shearer streamlines both shearing (cutting) and welding (fusing) operations into a single process, which gives students the chance to practice high-level techniques with professional-grade tools. It’s a critical piece of equipment that boosts both precision and safety.

The investment in new technology highlights WTC’s commitment to keeping curriculum aligned with industry standards—ensuring students graduate with real-world readiness, modern skills, and confidence in their craft.
