What do healthcare and criminal investigations have in common?

At Wilson Talent Center, students recently discovered that the answer might be right at their fingertips.

Health Foundations and Investigations students joined forces for a hands-on learning experience exploring the science behind fingerprints and the techniques used to collect and examine them.

For Health Foundations students, the lesson connected to their study of skin anatomy, including how fingerprints develop within the layers of the skin and what makes their patterns unique.

Investigations students brought a different perspective, sharing and practicing fingerprinting techniques used to document and examine identifying characteristics.

Together, the two groups explored the distinctive patterns found in fingerprints while applying knowledge from their respective career pathways.

The collaboration gave students an opportunity to see how scientific concepts connect across professional fields.

In healthcare, understanding the structure and function of the skin is an important foundation for patient care. In investigative work, fingerprints can provide valuable identifying information and help professionals examine evidence.

While the applications may differ, both fields rely on careful observation, attention to detail and an understanding of human anatomy.

The activity also encouraged students to communicate their knowledge, collaborate with peers and approach familiar concepts from new perspectives.

These interdisciplinary learning opportunities are an important part of career and technical education, helping students recognize that the skills they develop in one field can often have applications in another.

And although every fingerprint is unique, this experience gave Wilson Talent Center students something in common: a memorable opportunity to learn from one another.

That's hands-on learning that leaves an impression!
