April is Occupational Therapy Month, and across Ingham Intermediate School District, it’s a time to recognize the powerful impact occupational therapists (OTs) have on students, families, and school communities.

Occupational therapy supports people of all ages in developing the skills they need to participate in everyday life. In schools, that means helping students access learning, build independence, and feel confident navigating their day—from the classroom to the playground.

For students, these “everyday activities” are everything. Holding a pencil. Managing transitions. Staying focused. Making friends. Regulating emotions.

Occupational therapists step in to help students strengthen these essential life skills through individualized strategies and supportive environments.

In fact, school-based OT focuses on helping students fully participate in their education by addressing barriers related to motor skills, sensory processing, and social-emotional development.

The impact goes far beyond academics.

Occupational therapy helps students:

  • Build independence in daily routines
  • Improve fine motor and coordination skills
  • Strengthen focus and attention
  • Develop confidence and self-esteem
  • Engage more fully with peers and learning

Research shows that occupational therapy can improve sensory processing, social skills, and daily functioning—key components of student success.

At its core, occupational therapy is about meaningful engagement—helping each student participate in the moments that matter most.

And behind that work are dedicated professionals who show up every day to meet students where they are, helping them grow into where they’re going.

This month, and every month, we celebrate the occupational therapists who are enriching lives across our schools—one skill, one student, one moment at a time.
